The Taming of the Beasts

1º domingo de agosto

The Taming of the Beasts (Rapa das Bestas) is an ancient tradition that has its remote origins in the Bronze Age and which even the roman historian Estrabón mentions as a curious livestock activity, admiring some of its qualities. From the eighteenth century it becomes a festive celebration and receives the popular name of Rapa das Bestas.

Rapa das Bestas

In this celebration is revived the ancient ritual of cutting the manes and branding the cattle. The Taming of Beasts gains fame and popularity, because of the spectacle of the struggle between man and beast, the landscape beauty and the variety of acts that have been added to the appointed day.

Around noon there is a selection of the animals for later branding. The fighters test the bravery of the animals to overcome their resistance with strength and inteligence, placing horses in the ground, brading them and cutting their mane. The wildest animals are dominated with patience and wisdom in the narrow corridors that restric the movement of the beasts.

The mane is divided among the children before retrieving forces enjoying with family and friends in a traditional picnic: Galician octopus, barbecue, pies... that can be purchased at the canteens enabled.

After lunch, comes another magical moment in the day: the beauty of animals galloping in droves searching for freedom, after opening the gigs.

In the afternoon are played traditional games as cucaña that rewards the skills of young people searching a ham.

One of the more interesting activities of the day is the horse race with the best riders of the region. The competition ends with the award ceremony.
